সাবেক ব্রেক্সিট মিনিষ্টার স্টীভ বেকার
ব্রিটবাংলা ডেস্ক : ব্রেক্সিট ইস্যুতে টোরি এমপিদের মধ্যে মতবিরোধ ক্রমশ ঘনিভুত হচ্ছে। বিশেষ করে প্রধানমন্ত্রী থেরিসা মে’র ব্রেক্সিট পরিকল্পনা নিয়ে অন্তর্দাহে ভুগছে করজারভেটি পার্টি। দলের আগামী কনফারেন্সের আগে অন্তত ৮০ জন টোরি এমপি প্রধানমন্ত্রীর ব্রেক্সিট পরিকল্পনার বিরোধীতা করবেন বলে সতর্ক করেছেন সাবেক ব্রেক্সিট মিনিষ্টার স্টীভ বেকার। এর আগে মেইল অন সানডে’র এক কলামে সাবেক ফরেন সেক্রেটারী বরিস জনসন বলেছেন, প্রধানমন্ত্রীর ব্রেক্সিট পরিকল্পনা এক ধরনের আত্মঘাতি বোমার ভেস্ট। যা তিনি ইইউর হাতে তুলে দিচ্ছেন। যা সব সময় ইউকের জন্যে হুমকি হয়ে থাকবে। যদিও দলের আরো কয়েকজন এমপি স্টীভ বেকার এবং বরিস জনসনের সঙ্গে ভিন্ন মত পোষণ করেছেন।
২০১৯ সালের ২৯শে মার্চ ঘটিবাটি নিয়ে ইইউ ছেড়ে আসতে হবে ইউকেকে। কিন্তু এরপরে ইইউ এবং ইউকের মধ্যে সম্পর্ক কি থাকবে? এ নিয়ে প্রধানমন্ত্রী থেরিজা মে’র অফিস টেন ডাউনিং স্ট্রীট একটি প্রস্তাব তৈরী করেছে। আগামী অক্টোবর অথবা নভেম্বরে প্রস্তাবের উপর ভিত্তি করে চুড়ান্ত ডিভোর্স হবে ইউকে ও ইইউ’র মধ্যে।

প্রধানমন্ত্রীর ব্রেক্সিট প্রস্তাবটি এরিমধ্যে কেবিনেট সদস্যরাও অনুমোদন দিয়েছেন বলে টেন ডাউনিং স্ট্রীট দাবী করেছে। গত জুলাই মাসে কান্ট্রিসাইডে প্রধানমন্ত্রীর একটি আবাসিক বাসায় বিশেষ বৈঠকে কেবিনেট এতে অনুমোদন দেয় বলে দাবী করা হলেও ঐ বৈঠকের পরপরই ব্রেক্সিট সেক্রেটারীর পদ থেকে ডেভিড ডেভিস, ফরেন সেক্রেটারীর পদ থেকে বরিস জনসন এবং ব্রেক্সিট মিনিষ্টারের পদে থেকে স্টীভ বেকার পদত্যাগ করেন।
প্রেস এসোসিয়েশনের সঙ্গে এক স্বাক্ষাতকারে সাবেক ব্রেক্সিট মিনিষ্টার বলেছেন, দলের অন্তত ৮০ জন এমপি ব্রেক্সিট পরিকল্পনার বিরোধীতা করার প্রস্তুতি নিচ্ছেন। চলতি মাসে দলীয় কনফারেন্সে প্রধানমন্ত্রী এই বিরোধীতার মুখোমুখি হবেন। মেইল অন সানডেতে সাবেক ফরেন সেক্রেটারীর কলাম প্রকাশের পরদিনই এই সতর্কতা জারি করেন সাবেক ব্রেক্সিট মিনিষ্টার। তবে এর মধ্যে প্রধানমন্ত্রীর নেতৃত্বকে চ্যালেঞ্জ করছেন না বলেও নিশ্চিত করেন স্টীভ বেকার।
একদিকে প্রধানমন্ত্রী অন্যদিকে নিজের সংসার, কোন দিকে মনোযোগ দিবেন বরিস জনসন!
এদিকে মেইল অন সানডের কলামে প্রধানমন্ত্রীর ব্রেক্সিট পরিকল্পনাকে আত্মঘাতি বোমার ভেস্টের সঙ্গে তুলনা করেছেন সাবেক ফরেন সেক্রেটারী। তিনি বলেছেন, ইউকের চারপাশে এই ভেস্ট রেখে প্রধানমন্ত্রী এর রিমোট তুলে দিচ্ছেন ইইউর হাতে! তবে বরিস জনসনের এই কলাম প্রকাশের পর এর শব্দ চয়ন নিয়ে সমালোচনা করেছেন বেশ কয়েকজন দলীয় এমপি। দলের এক সিনিয়র নেতা বলেছেন, রাজনীতিতে এখন যে খারাপ বা ন্যাক্কাজনক অবস্থা যাচ্ছে, তা বরিস জনসনের কলামে ব্যবহৃত ভাষা বা শব্দ চয়ন থেকে পরিলক্ষিত হচ্ছে। দলের আরেক এমপি বলেছেন, রাজনৈতিক উচ্চাকাঙ্খা আছে বরিসের। আগামীতে প্রধানমন্ত্রী হবার স্বপ্ন দেখছেন তিনি। আর এ কারণে নিজের জনপ্রিয়তা যাচাই করতে গিয়ে বেশামাল হয়ে গেছেন তিনি।
জাস্টিস সেক্রেটারী ডেভিড গাউন বলেছেন, শুধু শুধু সমালোচনা না করে বিকল্প পরিকল্পনা দেওয়া উচিত বরিস জনসন কিংবা তার সমর্থকদের। আর না হলে এসব করে টেন ডাউনিং স্ট্রীটে প্রবেশ করা কঠিন হবে। এদিকে সাবেক এডুকেশন সেক্রেটারী নিকি মর্গান বলেছেন, নরওয়ে স্টাইলে ইইউর সঙ্গে সম্পর্ক রাখতে। নরওয়ে ইইউ সদস্য নয়। তারপরেও তারা সিঙ্গেল মার্কেট এবং কাস্টম ইউনিয়নের সাথে সম্পর্ক বজার রেখে ইইউর বাণিজ্যিক সুবিধা ভোগ করে আসছে। এ ধরনের সম্পর্ক রাখতে চান নিকি মর্গান।
As many as 80 Conservative MPs are prepared to vote against the prime minister’s Chequers plan, a former Brexit minister has warned.
Steve Baker, who quit over the deal, said the level of opposition means Theresa May faces a “massive problem” at this month’s party’s conference.
He told the Press Association the party will suffer a “catastrophic split” if Mrs May sticks with the Chequers deal.
The cabinet backed the plan when it met at the PM’s country residence in July.
The agreement, which led to the resignations of then-Brexit Secretary David Davis and the former Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson, sets out a blueprint for the future relationship with the EU once the UK leaves in March 2019.
Mr Baker is the former chairman of the Eurosceptic group the European Research Group (ERG), which plans to publish its own proposals for Brexit ahead of the Conservative Party conference.
Despite his criticism, Mr Baker said he was not calling for a change in leadership, adding that Tory critics of Chequers “do not want to be in a position of conflict with our own prime minister”.
He said they would give her “absolutely every support” in forging a free trade deal – which the ERG plans are said to focus on.
‘Suicide vest’ row
These latest interventions follow a week of criticism of the Chequers deal from former Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson.
He caused controversy over the weekend with a column in the Mail on Sunday, calling the PM’s plan a “suicide vest” around the UK, with the detonator in Brussels’ hands.
A number of senior Tories criticised the language he used, with one minister saying it marked a “disgusting moment” in politics.
But other colleagues of Mr Johnson said critics were “terrified of his popular appeal” and that he “speaks truth unto power”.
But Justice Secretary David Gauke said neither Mr Johnson nor his supporters were providing an “alternative credible plan” to Chequers and there was “no vacancy” in Downing Street.
And ex-education secretary Nicky Morgan, who backs a Norway-style association agreement with the EU, said the vast majority of the public wanted ministers to get on with negotiating a deal protecting the UK’s trading links with Europe.
A deal on the UK’s withdrawal agreement was expected to be agreed in time for an EU summit in October, along with a statement from both sides on the future relationship.
However, a number of senior figures have said this deadline may slide into November.
The UK is due to leave the EU on 29 March 2019.
