ব্রিটবাংলা ডেস্ক : ব্রিটিশ দ্বীপশহর ক্যাম্যান আইল্যান্ডের গভর্ণর হিসেবে নিয়োগ পাওয়ার প্রায় তিন মাসের মাথায় গভর্ণর পদ থেকে জুনের দ্বিতীয় সপ্তাহে সাময়িকভাবে বরখাস্ত করা হয়েছেন আনোয়ার চৌধুরী। তার বরখাস্তের কারণ এখনো আনুষ্ঠানিকভাবে জানানো হয়নি। তবে মেইল অন সানডের এক সংবাদে আনোয়ার চৌধুরী বরখাস্তের সম্ভাব্য কারণগুলো উল্লেখ করা হয়েছে।

গত মার্চে ক্যামান আইল্যান্ডের গভর্ণর পদে নিয়োগ পাওয়ার পর তাঁর বিরুদ্ধে বেশ কয়েকটি অভিযোগের তদন্ত হচ্ছে বলে ব্রিটিশ কমনওয়েলথ অফিস থেকে জুনের দ্বিতীয় সপ্তাহে আনোয়ার চৌধুরীকে ডেকে পাঠানো হয় বলে জানান ক্যাম্যান আইল্যান্ডের প্রধান প্রশাসক এলডেন ম্যাকল্যাফলিন। এসব অভিযোগের তদন্ত সম্পন্ন হতে অন্তত ৬ সপ্তাহ সময় লাগতে পারে বলেও জানান তিনি। তদন্ত শেষ না হওয়া পর্যন্ত আনোয়ার চৌধুরী গভর্ণর পদে থাকবেন না। ভারপ্রাপ্ত গভর্ণর হিসেবে দায়িত্ব পালন করবেন ডেপুটি গভর্ণর ফ্রেঞ্জ ম্যান্ডারসান। তদন্তে নির্দোশ প্রমাণিত হলে হয়তো তিনি স্বপদে ফিরে যেতে পারেন। তবে আনোয়ার চৌধুরীর বিরুদ্ধে প্রকৃত অভিযোগ এখনো ফরেন অফিস বা আনোয়ার চৌধুরীর পক্ষ থেকে প্রকাশ করা হয়নি।
যদিও ব্রিটেন এবং ক্যামান আইল্যান্ডের বিভিন্ন সুত্রের বরাত দিয়ে মেইল অন সানডের এক রিপোর্টে বলা হয়েছে, ৫৯ বছর বয়সী অভিজ্ঞতা সম্পন্ন এই ব্রিটিশ কুটনীতিকের বিরুদ্ধে ক্যামান আইল্যান্ডে স্টাফদের সাথে অশুভ আচরণ এবং গভর্ণর ভবনে পরিচারিকাকে শরীর ম্যাসেজ (খালি গায়ে) করে দেওয়ার কথা বলেন বলে অভিযোগ করা হয়েছে। গভর্ণর ভবনে তিনি স্টাফদের বুলিং এবং সাউটিং করতেন বলে অভিযোগ করা হয়।
এছাড়াও বাসার ভেতরে আনোয়ার চৌধুরী তাঁর চাইতে বয়সে ১৬ বছরের ছোট স্ত্রী মোমিনার সঙ্গে অসদাচরন এবং মদ্যপ অবস্থায় শ্বাশুড়ির সঙ্গে চিৎকার করেন বলেও অভিযোগ করা হয়। অভিযোগ আছে, বাসার ক্লিনারকে নিজের শিশু কন্যাকে দেখাশুনা করতে বলেছিলেন আনোয়ার চৌধুরী। কিন্তু ক্লিনার সেটা না করে পাল্টা তার বিরুদ্ধে অভিযোগ করেছেন।
যদিও আনোয়ার চৌধুরী এ বিষয়ে দ্যা মেইল অন সানডের কাছে কোনো মন্তব্য করতে চাননি। তবে অলপার্টি পার্লামেন্টারী গ্রুপ অব দ্যা ক্যামান আইল্যান্ডের এমপিরা জানিয়েছেন, আনোয়ার চৌধুরীর বিরুদ্ধে অভিযোাগ থাকায় তাকে বরখাস্ত করা হয়েছে বলে তারা শুনেছেন। এর মধ্যে অবশ্য একজন এমপি বলেছেন, কর্মস্থলে অসদাচরণের অভিযোগেই আনোয়ার চৌধুরীকে ফিরিয়ে আনা হয়েছে বলে তিনি জেনেছেন।
আনোয়ার চৌধুরীর বিরুদ্ধে উত্থাপিত অভিযোগের তদন্ত অব্যাহত থাকায় এ বিষয়ে কোনো মন্তব্য করেনি ব্রিটিশ ফরেন এন্ড কমনওয়েলথ অফিস।
The governor of the Cayman Islands has been recalled to Britain by the Foreign Office following allegations of bullying and shouting at staff, drunken rows and demanding a maid give him a shirtless massage.
Anwar Choudhury, 59, appointed to the Caribbean post in March, has been suspended after a string of complaints.
Sources in Britain and the Caymans said that the complaints made against Choudhury relate to his treatment of domestic staff and office employees.
He is alleged to have asked a maid to massage his shirtless back, a request she found inappropriate, though there is no suggestion of sexual impropriety.
Sources have said that he is also accused of misbehaviour towards his wife, Momina, 16 years his junior.
In addition it is claimed he had a drunken row with his elderly mother-in-law one night.
At his Government House mansion, it is claimed he shouted at and bullied staff.
Choudhury also allegedly asked the maids to nanny his baby daughter, but they declined, saying their duties extended only to cleaning.
A distinguished diplomat, Choudhury was suspended two weeks ago but until now the reasons for his recall were not known.
Last night, he refused to comment on the complaints when contacted by The Mail on Sunday.
MPs on the All-Party Parliamentary Group for the Cayman Islands said they had been told about the allegations made against Choudhury.
One said: ‘As I understand it, the complaints relate to his conduct.’
Last night, the Foreign & Commonwealth Office said: ‘Anwar Choudhury has been temporarily withdrawn from his post to allow the FCO to investigate a number of complaints against him.
‘It is inappropriate to comment further while an investigation is ongoing.’
