Men jailed for handling stolen goods

Two men have been jailed for a total of 17 years for handling stolen goods from a series of aggravated burglaries of mobile phone stores across east and north London in 2016.

The men were all sentenced on Friday, 13 July at Blackfriars Crown Court as follows:

Iftehar Ahmed, 38 (05.09.79) of Tarling Street, Tower Hamlets was sentenced to eight-and-a-half years imprisonment.

Zakir Hossain, 41 (04.03.77) of Hannibal Road, Tower Hamlets was jailed for eight-and-a-half years.

A third man, Munna Miah, 31 (30.05.87) of Manchester Road, Tower Hamlets was jailed for 16 months, suspended for two years. He also has to complete 200 hours of unpaid work.

All three had previously pleaded guilty on Wednesday, 9 May at Blackfriars Crown Court to conspiracy to receive stolen goods between 1 May 2016 and 27 November 2016.

These sentences follow the imprisonment of 11 men in December who were found guilty of 17 aggravated burglaries of mobile phone stores across east and north London in the same time period. They received over 118 years’ imprisonment in total.

The stolen property, namely mobile phones and tablets, as well as significant damage caused to premises during the burglaries, was estimated to be over £1million.

The phones were disposed of through two mobile phone shops – the Vallance Super Store on Dunbridge Street in Tower Hamlets, owned by Ahmed; and the A to Z phone service on Whitechapel Road, Tower Hamlets E1, which Ahmed owned with his associate, Zakir Hossain.

Miah, who is Ahmed’s brother-in-law, drove a private-hire vehicle which he used to transport the stolen goods between the gang’s addresses and Ahmed’s shops. The significant majority of the phones handled by the three defendants were found to have been shipped to Bangladesh.

By 2 March 2017, officers had built up a substantial package of evidence and executed a number of search warrants at the suspects’ homes and business addresses.

One of the targeted mobile phone shop chains had placed imitation phones with GPS trackers within their stock that had been stolen. GPS data from the ninth offence on 6 September 2016 revealed the phones to be in the Vallance Super Store. Similarly, on 30 September 2016, following the eleventh offence, another GPS tracker was activated at the same store.

Ahmed was arrested at the A to Z phone service shop and Miah was arrested at his home address. Hossain was arrested on 22 March 2017 at Heathrow Airport as he returned from Bangladesh.

A series of hand-written notes were found at the A to Z phone service shop premises, which corresponded with stolen phone lists from the three mobile phone shops.

A mobile phone attributable to Ahmed was recovered and forensically examined; it revealed that:

– Ahmed had been in direct contact with a number of the convicted crime group after the burglaries, arranging collection and delivery of the phones and the prices they expected to receive.
– Ahmed had called Hossain after the burglaries to agree prices and numbers of phones.
– A retrieved image from the phone showed a batch of stolen phones from the offence on 6 July 2016 and the image was geotagged to the Vallance Superstore.

Additionally, data from other recovered stolen phones identified the gang to have used them to order private hire vehicles to transport the stolen goods.

Detective Sergeant Danny Watts, of the Violent Crime Task Force, said: “This robust investigation has seen the dismantling and imprisonment of a significant number of members of a violent criminal gang.

“These handlers all worked together with the gang to target a chain of mobile phone shops across central and east London and to profit from stolen goods. They did not care about the violence they inflicted upon security staff or the damage caused to premises. Their behaviour was truly shocking.

“If you commit these offences we will find you and bring you to justice.”
