ব্রিটবাংলা ডেস্ক : লেবার পার্টি প্রস্তাবিত ২০২১ সালের ইস্টার পর্যন্ত ফ্রি স্কুল মিলের পক্ষে ভোট দিয়ে সরকারের সঙ্গ ছাড়লেন টোরি এমপি ক্যারোলাইল এনসেল। তিনি পার্লামেন্টে পরিবেশ এবং খাদ্য মন্ত্রণালয়ের প্রাইভেট সেক্রেটারী হিসেবে দায়িত্ব পালন করছিলেন। লেবার পার্টির প্রস্তাব সমর্থন করে পার্লামেন্টে ভোট দেওয়ার পর সরকারী দায়িত্ব থেকে পদত্যাগ করেন তিনি। ইস্টবার্নের এমপি ক্যারালাইনের সাথে আরো চার টোরি এমপি লেবার পার্টির প্রস্তাব সমর্থন করে ভোট দিয়েছেন।
বুধবার পার্লামেন্টে অনুষ্ঠিত এই ভোটাভোটিতে ৩২২ ভোটে প্রস্তাবটি প্রত্যাখ্যান করেন টোরি এমপিরা। লেবার সমর্থনে পড়ে ২৬২ ভোট। ৬১ ভোট বেশি পায় সরকার।
উল্লেখ্য, ম্যানচেস্টার ইউনাইটেডের তারকা ফুটবলার মার্কাস রাশফোর্ড এমবিই ২০২১ সালের ইস্টার হলিডে পর্যন্ত ফ্রি স্কুল চালু রাখার জন্যে ক্যাম্পেই করে যাচ্ছেন। এই ক্যাম্পেইনের প্রতি সমর্থন জানিয়ে বুধবার পার্লামেন্টে আগামী ইস্টার হলিডে পর্যন্ত ফ্রি স্কুল মিল বহাল রাখার প্রস্তাব উত্থাপন করে লেবার পার্টি।
A Tory MP has quit her government job after voting for a Labour motion to offer free school meals during holidays until Easter 2021.
Caroline Ansell said vouchers were not a long-term solution – but they helped families struggling with the pandemic.
Footballer Marcus Rashford, who is leading a campaign on child hunger, urged MPs to “unite” and stop being influenced by “political affiliation”.
On Wednesday evening, MPs rejected the Labour motion by 322 votes to 261.
Home Office Minister Kit Malthouse insisted the government was helping low-income families through the welfare system.
He said the government had raised Universal Credit by £20 a week, adjusted housing benefit to help people with their rent and given £63m to councils to help with hardship funding.
In a statement this morning, Ms Ansell said: “In these unprecedented times, I am very concerned to be doing all we can to help lower-income families and their children who are really struggling due to the impact of the virus.”
“Therefore, last night, I voted for Labour’s motion on extending free school meal vouchers until after Easter 2021 for those families in receipt of Universal Credit or an equivalent benefit.
“I do not consider this extension could be in any way a long-term solution to this need, which is complex. There are better ways to help children, including linking meals to activities so they can also benefit from extra-curricular learning and experience.
“However, as we are still very much living in the shadow of the pandemic, vouchers are a lever – not perfect, not sustainable – but one which I thought could be used to reach families in Eastbourne and across the country in the immediate time ahead. I could not in all conscience ignore that belief.”
“Due to my decision not to support the government in this debate, I have resigned as a Parliamentary Private Secretary at the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs.”
