As 2018 draws to a close we can reflect on another year of progress for many, but with an underlying uncertainty, particularly with Brexit remaining
Our Brexit Commission will be launching its report in the New Year and this week came to Brick Lane to listen to the views of businesses there.
Tower Hamlets remains an exciting place, with rapid growth and continuing improvement in the Council’s performance, in spite of severe spending cuts. The final government direction was removed, and a free and fair election moved us into a new chapter.
We are now making a real difference delivering on my pledge to build 2,000 council homes, getting 5,000 residents into training and work in the first year of WorkPath and launching a Young WorkPath Hub at Watney Market, making our streets safer through initiatives like Operation Continuum taking drug dealers off of our streets and cleaner with our Big Clean Up events and deciding to bring waste services in-house.
As we look forward to 2019 there will be fresh challenges. We await the full impact of Brexit. We’ve recently closed our budget consultation and I look forward to presenting ourproposals in the New Year. While there will be tough choices in the face of continued Government cuts and much work to be done, we remain the most exciting part of London.
