Razib, Dia’s deaths: 2 drivers, helper of Jabal-e-Noor buses get life term

Online Desk : A Dhaka court has sentenced two drivers and a helper of two buses of Jabal-e-Noor Paribahan to life term rigorous imprisonment each in a case filed over deaths of college students Abdul Karim Rajib and Dia Khanam Mim in a road accident in the city’s Airport Road area in July, 2018.

The lifers are Masum Billah and Zobair Hossain Sumon, drivers of the buses; and Kazi Asad, helper of a bus.

Dhaka Metropolitan Sessions Judge Imrul Qayes announced the verdict in presence of Masum Billah and Zobair Hossain Sumon on Sunday. Asad was on the run.
The court also fined them Tk 50,000, and they will have to suffer six months more rigorous imprisonment if they fail to pay the fine.

The court acquitted two people — Jabal-e-Noor owner Jahangir Alam and bus helper Enayet Hossain — as allegations brought against them could not be proved.

Earlier on November 14, the court fixed December 1 to pass the verdict as both defence and the prosecution concluded their arguments in the case on that day.

The court examined 37 witnesses including investigation officer (IO) Qazi Shariful Islam of the total 41 witnesses.

The IO on September 6, 2018, filed chargesheet in the case.

On July 29, 2018, two students– Rajib and Dia– of Shaheed Ramiz Uddin Cantonment College were run over during a mad race between two buses of Jabal-e-Noor Paribahan on Dhaka’s Airport Road.
Agitated people torched the two buses and triggered a widespread protest by the students demanding justice for their fellows and road safety.

Dia’s father Jahangir Hossain Fakir filed the case with Cantonment Police Station to this end.
