ব্রিটিশ রাজনীতিতে ফিরছেন ডেভিড মিলিব্যান্ড : DAVID Miliband is relaunching his UK political career

ব্রিটবাংলা ডেস্ক : প্রায় আট বছর বিরতীর পর ব্রিটিশ রাজনীতিতে আবার সক্রিয় হচ্ছেন লেবার পার্টির সাবেক ফরেন সেক্রেটারী ডেভিড মিলিব্যান্ড। ২০১০ সালের সাধারণ নির্বাচনের পর সাবেক লেবার লিডার গর্ডন ব্রাউনের পদত্যাগের পর লেবার পার্টির লিডারশীপ প্রতিযোগিতায় ছোট ভাই এড মিলিব্যান্ডের কাছে পরাজিত হয়ে রাজনীতি থেকে দুরে সরে গিয়েছিলেন বড় ভাই ডেভিড মিলিব্যান্ড।

রাজনীতি ছেড়ে ২০১৩ সাল থেকে নিউইয়র্কে  ইন্টার ন্যাশনাল রেস্কো কমিটির প্রধান হিসেবে যোগ দেন তিনি। এরমধ্যে মাঝে মাঝে সামাজিক মাধ্যমে ব্রিটিশ রাজনীতি নিয়ে ছোট্টখাটো মন্তব্য করলেও এবার ব্রেক্সিট নিয়ে মুখ খুলছেন তিনি।

সোমবার সর্ব দলীয় এন্টি ব্রেক্সিট গ্রুপের একটি মিটিংয়ে সাবেক ডেপুটি প্রধানমন্ত্রী ও সাবেক লিবডেম লিডার নিক ক্ল্যাগ এবং সিনিয়র টোরি এমপি নিকি মর্গানের সঙ্গে  এক মঞ্চে বসে কথা বলেন সাবেক লেবার এমপি ডেভিড মিলিব্যান্ড।

হার্ড  ব্রেক্সিটার বর্তমান ফরেন সেক্রেটারী বরিস জনসন এবং জ্যাকব রিসের বিরুদ্ধে ডেভিড মিলিব্যান্ড শক্তিশালি বার্তা দেন তিনি।

ডেভিড মিলিব্যান্ড, নিক ক্ল্যাগ এবং নিকি মর্গানের সর্বদলীয় এই বৈঠকের মাধ্যমে লেবার, লিবডেম এবং টোরিতে ব্রেক্সিট ইস্যুতে ইইউ সমর্থক বলয় আরো শক্তিশালি হবে বলে ধারণা করা হচ্ছে।

উল্লেখ্য, ৫২ বছর বয়সী ডেভিড মিলিব্যান্ড সাবেক প্রধানমন্ত্রী টনি ব্লেয়ারের প্রধান নীতি নির্ধারক ছিলেন। ১৯৯৭ সালের নির্বাচনের জন্যে দলের অন্যতম ম্যানোফেস্টু লেখক ছিলেন তিনি। ২০০১ সালে প্রথম এমপি নির্বাচিত হন। ২০০৭ সালে সাবেক প্রধানমন্ত্রী গর্ডন ব্রাউনের আমলে মাত্র ৪১ বছর বয়সে ব্রিটিশ ফরেন সেক্রেটারীর দায়িত্ব পালন করেন তিনি। একই সময় চার বছরের ছোট ভাই এড মিলিব্যান্ডও কেবিনেটে ছিলেন। ১৯৩০ সালের পর তারা দুই ভাই এক সঙ্গে লেবার পার্টির কেবিনেটে কাজ করেন। তবে ২০১০ সালে লেবার লিডারশীপ প্রতিযোগিতায় ছোট ভাই এডের সঙ্গে পরাজয় বরণ করে এমপি পদ থেকে পদত্যাগ করে রাজনীতি থেকে নিজেকে দুরে সরিয়ে নিয়েছিলেন ডেভিড মিলিব্যান্ড। দীর্ঘ প্রায় আট বছর পর ব্রিটিশ রাজনীতিতে তার পদচারণার বিষয়টি ব্যাপকভাবে আলোচিত হচ্ছে ব্রিটিশ মিডিয়ায়।

DAVID Miliband is relaunching his UK political career eight years after his brother Ed stabbed him in the back by joining a cross-party anti-Brexit group this week.

The former Labour Foreign Secretary will accuse hard Brexiteers like Boris Johnson and Jacob Rees-Mogg of “holding Britain to ransom”.

After several years in America he is joining up with join the Lib Dem’s ex-Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg and the senior Conservative MP Nicky Morgan to deliver a pro-EU message.

It will again spark rumours that a new centrist party could be formed to bring together disaffected Labour MPs, the pro-EU Lib Dems and Conservative rebels on Brexit.

Mr Miliband has long been seen as a potential Labour leader, despite a humiliating defeat to his younger brother Ed in the 2010 contest to replace Gordon Brown.

After quitting as an MP in the wake of the devastating loss, which both men said put a strain on their family, he moved to the EU to head up the charity International Rescue Committee.

And despite occasional forays into Westminster issues he has largely stayed out of the British political fray.

But re-entering it today, he writes in the Mail on Sunday: “A hard Brexit won’t create Global Britain.

“It is merely a path to a fantasy island of our own where we will have reduced access to our largest markets and a diminished standing in the world.”

The trio are calling on MPs from all parties to “take back control of the direction of Brexit” and table amendments to Theresa May’s EU legislation to force her hand and change the direction of the negotiations with Brussels.
