ব্রিটবাংলা রিপোর্ট : তিন বেডরুমের একটি ফ্লাটে ১৬ জন বাসিন্দাকে ভাড়া দেওয়ার অভিযোগে টাওয়ার হ্যামলেটসের এক ল্যান্ডলর্ডকে ৫ হাজার পাউন্ড জরিমানা করেছে আদালত।
বারার বো এলাকার ৩ বেড রুমের একটি ফ্লাটে ৭ জন শিশুসহ ৪টি পরিবারকে ভাড়া দেওয়া হয় বলে কাউন্সিলের অফিসাররা জানিয়েছেন। ৪ সদস্য করে ৩টি পরিবার, ৩ সদস্যের আরেক পরিবার এবং একজন পুরুষ, সর্বমোট ১৬ জনের জন্য ১টি কিচেন, ১টি টয়লেট এবং ১টি বাথরুম ছিল। এই ফ্লাটের ল্যান্ডলর্ডের নাম নাজরুল ইসলাম ভুঁইয়া। তিনি রমফোর্ডের বাসিন্দা।
বো ম্যাজিস্ট্রেট কোর্টের শুনানিতে বলা হয়েছে, বেশি ভাড়া আদায়ের লক্ষ্যে ল্যান্ডলর্ড ফ্লাটে রোম বাড়িয়েছেন। তাতে ফ্লাটে ফায়ার এলার্ম এবং ফায়ার এক্সিট ছিল না। একবার আগুন লাগার পর অনেক কস্টে তারা ঘর থেকে বের হতে সক্ষম হন বলে কোর্টে জানানো হয়। কোর্টের বিচারক ল্যান্ডলর্ডকে ৫টি অভিযোগে দোষি সাব্যস্ত করেন। তাকে ৪ হাজার ৭শ ৫০ পাউন্ড জরিমানা এবং কোর্টের ব্যয় বাবদ আরো ১ হাজার ৪শ ২৯ পাউন্ড পরিশোধের নির্দেশ দিয়েছে কোর্ট।
টাওয়ার হ্যামলেটস কাউন্সিলের ডেপুটি মেয়র এবং কাউন্সিলের হাউসিংয়ের লিড মেম্বার কাউন্সিলর সিরাজুল ইসলাম কোর্টের এই রায় প্রকাশের পর এক প্রতিক্রিয়ায় জানিয়েছেন, যেসব ল্যান্ডলর্ড টেনেন্টসদের বিপজ্জনক পরিস্থিতিতে ফেলতে চায় তাদের বিরুদ্ধে আইন অনুযায়ী কাউন্সিল কঠোর ব্যবস্থা নেবে। বো’র কেইস তারই একটি দৃষ্টান্ত বলে মন্তব্য করেন তিনি।
‘Irresponsible’ landlord fined £5,000 in Tower Hamlets
A landlord who packed 16 people into one “dangerously overcrowded” three-bedroom flat in east London has been hit with a £5,000 fine.
Tower Hamlets Council officers discovered four families, including seven children, and a single man crammed into the property, which had just one bathroom, a kitchen and a toilet, in Bow.
The group included three families of four people, one family of three and a lone man, a council spokeswoman said.
Landlord Nazrul Islam Bhuiyan had converted the flat in a bid to make more money from rent, Bow Magistrates’ Court heard.
However, no fire alarms or fire doors had been fitted and had a fire broken out the occupants would have struggled to escape, the court was told.
Mr Bhuiyan, of Robinia Close, Romford, pleaded guilty to five charges under the Housing Act 2014 at Tower Hamlets Magistrates’ Court last month.
He was ordered to pay a £4,750 fine and £1,429 in court costs.
Tower Hamlets Deputy Mayor and Cabinet Member for Housing, Councillor Sirajul Islam said: “Bad landlords who exploit their tenants and expose them to danger can expect strong action from the Council, and if we discover that that laws to protect tenants are being flouted we will investigate and prosecute.”
