ব্রিটবাংলা ডেস্ক : গ্রেটার ম্যানচেষ্টারের মোরল্যান্ডসের আগুন নেভাতে সেনা বাহিনী নামানো হচ্ছে। আগুন নেভাতে সেনা বাহিনীর সহযোগিতা চাওয়া হয়েছে বলে নিশ্চিত করেছে গ্রেটার ম্যানচেষ্টার ফায়ার এন্ড রেসকো সার্ভিস। বৃহস্পতিবার সকাল থেকেই সেনাবাহিনী আগুন নিয়ন্ত্রণে আনতে কাজ শুরু করবে বলে জানিয়েছেন গ্রেটার ম্যানচেষ্টারের মেয়র এন্ডি বার্নহাম। পুরো পরিস্থিতি টেন ডাউনিং স্ট্রীটের পর্যবেক্ষণে রয়েছে বলে জানিয়েছেন প্রধানমন্ত্রী থেরিজা মে।
সোমবার দিবাগত রাত থেকে গ্রেটার ম্যানচেষ্টারের পাহাড়ি এলাকা মোরল্যান্ডসের বনে আগুন লাগে। ক্রমান্বয়ে আগুন বাড়তে থাকে। এলাকার প্রায় ৩ দশমিক ৭ মাইল এলাকাজুড়ে আগুনের তাপ ছড়িয়ে পড়েছে। এলাকার প্রায় ১শ বাড়ি খালি করা হয়েছে। স্থানীয় বাসিন্দারা জানিয়েছেন, বৃষ্টির মতো আকাশ থেকে ছাই পড়ছে। কারো কারো মতে, অলৌকিক কিছু ঘটতে যাচ্ছে এই এলাকায়। প্রায় ৪টি স্কুল বন্ধ ঘোষণা করা হয়েছে। প্রচণ্ড ধোয়া এবং ছাইভস্মের প্রভাবে অসুস্থ্য হয়ে যাচ্ছে সাধারণ মানুষ।
ভয়াবহ আগুন নিয়ন্ত্রনে আনতে দুদিন যাবত চেষ্টা করেছে ফায়ার সার্ভিস। কিন্তু তাদের কাছে যে হোস পাইপ আছে তা দিয়ে দুই মাইলের বেশি পানি পৌছানো যায় না। পরিস্থিত বিবেচনায় নিয়েই আগুন নিয়ন্ত্রণে আনতে সেনাবাহিনীর সহযোগিতা কামনা করা হয়।
ডিফেন্স মিনিষ্ট্রি জানিয়েছে, আগুণ নিয়ন্ত্রনে নিতে সেনাবাহিনীর সহযোগিতা চাওয়া হয়েছে। রাতের ভেতরেই পুরো পরিকল্পনার কাজ শেষ করা হবে। বৃহস্পতিবার সকালেই সেনাবাহিনী কাজ শুরু করবে। প্রধানমন্ত্রী থেরিজা মে এক বিবৃতিতে জানিয়েছেন, সরকার পুরো পরিস্থিতি পর্যবেক্ষন করছে।
The military has been called in to help battle a huge moorlands fire which has been raging for three days.
The blaze covers 3.7miles (6km) of moorland above Stalybridge and prompted the evacuation of up to 100 homes.
Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) confirmed it had asked for military assistance.
One resident described seeing “ash falling like rain” and another said it “looked like the apocalypse”.
Four schools have closed and a GP said he had seen patients with nosebleeds, coughs and eye problems caused by the smoke.
Firefighters are having to haul pumps and hoses for up to two miles in blistering heat to reach parts of the fire.
Prime Minister Theresa May said the government is keeping the situation “under constant review”.
Greater Manchester’s assistant chief fire officer Dave Keelan said a “request” had gone in for military assistance.
“That’s for help to move high-volume pumps and to transport personnel to remote locations,” he said.
Pressed on the arrangements, he said the military was likely to use Chinook helicopters to move two water pumps.
A Ministry of Defence spokeswoman confirmed the fire service had approached them “as a priority” and the MoD was “looking into what might be done.”
Greater Manchester mayor Andy Burnham started a question time event in Stretford saying that if the Home Office agreed, military resources should be available by Thursday morning.
