ব্রিটবাংলা ডেস্ক : আগামী ইস্টারের আগেই ব্রিটিশ পাসপোর্টের ফি বৃদ্ধি পাচ্ছে। আর এক্ষেত্রে ১৬ বছরের নীচে শিশু কিশোরদের পাসপোর্ট ফি ২৭ শতাংশ বৃদ্ধি পাবে। শিশুদের পাসপোর্টের ফি ৪৬ পাউন্ড থেকে বেড়ে ৫৮ দশমিক ৫০ পেন্স হবে। অন্যদিকে বড়দের পাসপোর্টের ফি বৃদ্ধি পেয়ে ৭২ দশমিক ৫০ পেন্সে থেকে ৮৫ পাউন্ডে যাবে।
পার্লামেন্টে এমপিরা ভোটাভুটির মাধ্যমে পাসপোর্ট নতুন পাসপোর্ট ফি নির্ধারন করেন। যদিও লেবার পার্টি পাসপোর্ট ফি বৃদ্ধির বিপক্ষে অবস্থান নিয়েছিল। কিন্তু টোরি এমপিরা ভোটের মাধ্যমে তা পাশ করেন। ৩১৭ জন এমপি ভোটে অংশ নেন। এর মধ্যে ২৮৫ জন এমপি এর পক্ষে ভোট দেন।
শেডো হোম সেক্রেটারী ডায়ান এবোট পাসপোর্ট ফি বৃদ্ধির সমালোচনা করে বলেছেন, এর মাধ্যমে বিপুল সংখ্যক পরিবারের হলিডের ব্যাঘাত ঘটবে।
আগামী ২৭শে মার্চ থেকে ব্রিটিশ পাসপোর্টের নতুন ফি কার্যকর হবে। তবে নতুন পাসপোর্ট ফি আরোপ করা হবে যারা পোস্টে পাসপোর্টের জন্যে আবেদন করবেন তাদের ক্ষেত্রে। অনলাইন সার্ভিসের প্রতি সাধারণ মানুষকে আকৃষ্ট করতেই পোস্টাল সার্ভিসের ফি বৃদ্ধি করা হয়েছে বলে জানিয়েছে এইচএম পাসপোর্ট অফিস। এর মাধ্যমে ২০১৮-১৯ অর্থ বছরে প্রায় ৫০ মিলিয়ন পাউন্ড আয় হবে বলেও আশা করছে এইচএমপিও।
এদিকে এইচএমপিও ধারণা করছে, নতুন ফি বৃদ্ধির খবরটি সাধারণ মানুষের কাছে গিয়ে পৌঁছার পরপরই এবং তা কার্যকবর হবার পূর্ব পর্যন্ত অতিরিক্ত প্রায় ২শ স্টাফের প্রয়োজন হতে পারে। কারণ ইউকেতে এখনো প্রতি ১০ জনের মধ্যেও মাত্র ১ জনের ঘরে ইন্টারনেট আছে। খবরটি চাউর হওয়ার সঙ্গে সঙ্গে ২৭ শে মার্চের আগেই পোস্টালে পাসপোর্টের জন্যে আবেদনের সংখ্যা বৃদ্ধি পেতে পারে বলে ধারণা করা হচ্ছে। তবে পাসপোর্ট ফি বৃদ্ধির সঙ্গে ব্রেক্সিট বা ব্রেক্সিটের পর পাসপোর্টের রং বদলে যাওয়া ব্লু রংয়ের পাসপোর্টের যে কথাবার্তা সংবাদ মাধ্যমে আসছে তার সাথে কোনো সম্পর্ক নেই বলেও নিশ্চিত করেছে এইচএম পাসপোর্ট অফিস। এইচএমপিও প্রতি বছর প্রায় ৬য় মিলিয়ন প্সাপোর্ট হ্যান্ডল করে থাকে।
Passports fees to rise before Easter
The fees for passport applications will rise before Easter – and the cost of a child’s one is set to go up by 27 per cent.
The cost of an application for an adult passport will increase from £72.50 to £85 while a passport for children under 16 will now cost £58.50, up from £46.
Labour had tried to block the price rise, but they have now been confirmed as coming into force by Tory MPs.
The proposal was passed in a House of Commons vote by 317 to 258.
The new prices, which only apply to postal applications, will come into effect on March 27.
Applicants can avoid the price hike by applying for a passport in the coming weeks.
Online application fees will also rise, but by less. Adults will have to pay £75.50 for a passport while a child’s will cost £49.
Shadow Home Secretary Diane Abbott said the price rise could force some families to cancel their holidays.
The price rises are part of a drive to increase the use of online services.
An impact assessment said HM Passport Office is expected to receive additional income of up to £50 million in the financial year 2018-19 from the fee increase.
The document notes that HMPO has identified that up to 200 extra staff may be needed to handle extra demand that may occur between the fee increase becoming public knowledge and the new fees coming into force.
One in ten households in Great Britain do not have internet access, according to official figures.
The price rises are unrelated to the announcement that the UK passport will change colour from burgundy to blue after Britain leaves the EU.
HMPO processes over six million passport applications each year.
